Chapter Twenty

In the car on route to Glasgow the next day, Robbie decided to call Peg. He’d not spoken to her since just after arriving back home to Leeds. He’d meant to; he just never seemed to get round to it. Truth be told though, he did care. If he were being honest with himself, phoning her would’ve been done out of duty rather than genuine concern. There was just too much else going on for him to see Peg as having any kind of priority right now. But she’s Eban’s daughter and that gave her some relevance in what was happening right now; she could have snippets of information that might prove useful.

“Hi Peg, it’s Robbie. How are y’doing? How’s Maev?”

“Okay, she’s still in Glasgow, on the cardiac ward. They’ve put her one o’ them pacemakers in, said her heartbeat was very irregular after what happened, so it should be okay now with this in. She’s improving but it’s going tae be a slow process given her age. Where are ya? Ya sound like yer outside somewhere.”

Robbie paused briefly before answering, not sure if he should tell her of his plans or not, before deciding that he just couldn’t be bothered making up yet another lie. “I’m actually on my way t’Glasgow myself, just left Edinburgh. I’ve got my brother with me, Rich. Ya likely won’t be in agreement, but I want t’see Eban’s adoption documents, I want t’know about Martha Richards.”

“What on earth for?” Peg sounded dumbfounded. “How’s that going tae help anyone, least of all yerself?”

“I don’t know Peg,” Robbie sighed. “I have no idea, I just know that I need t’know more. I can’t even explain it an’ god knows I’ve tried. I’ve had all these questions from my lot too. I just need t’know, peace of mind maybe.”

“D’ya really suppose ya’ll gain peace of mind from knowing Robbie? Really?”

“Maybe, I don’t know. My wife’s pregnant, I only just found out an’ it just seems so much more important to know about my bloodline now for some reason. If I’m from a family of head-cases then it scares me shitless that my baby might inherit that.”

“If you’re from a family o' head-cases Robbie, then so am I. But be honest now, what good will knowing that actually do? Will it change anything? No, it won’t. You’ll still be having a baby, congratulations by the way, an’ life will still continue as it does. All yer going tae gain, is a pile o' worry ya could well do without. Leave it alone Robbie; it’ll do ya no good.”

“I can’t. I need t’know Peg.”

“D’ya know what Robbie? Yer sounding more an’ more like Martin was, obsessed tae the point o’ distraction. It’s not healthy! Maybe there is a chance we’ve got some nutcase gene in our DNA, an’ maybe there’s a chance we could pass it on. But there’s a fair old chance we won’t too, have ya considered that? There’s plenty of us that’s okay ya know.”

“I
